UK Immigration and UK Visa Services
The UK has introduced a number of new UK immigration, naturalization, UK visa, work permit and UK working visa categories in the last few years. The points based skilled immigration category the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), introduced in January 2002, proved to be very successful.
Below is an overview of the points based tiered immigration system:
Five Tiers
- Tier 1: For highly skilled migrants, entrepreneurs, investors, and graduate students. This replaced the previous Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), the Entrepreneur and Investor schemes, and the International Graduates Scheme.
- Tier 2: This is for skilled workers who have a job offer. This tier encompasses the previous UK Work Permit rules.
- Tier 3: For a limited numbers of lower skilled workers to fill temporary shortages in the labour market.
- Tier 4: Students.
- Tier 5: For youth mobility and temporary workers, such as those who come under Working Holiday agreements with other countries.
Spouses of UK citizens or permanent residents (mainly those with indefinite leave to remain) may come to the UK under marriage visa category, and are able to work as soon as a visa is granted.
The requirements for immigration to UK as a Fiancé/e’s are very similar to the rules for married couples. You may wish to consider very carefully whether it is best to marry first and then apply for entry as this will avoid the necessity of making a fiance/e application and then a second application to remain as a spouse. However, please note that it is no longer possible for most visitors to change status to a spouse visa.
You can apply for a UK Working Holidaymakers Visa if you are a Commonwealth Citizen or British Dependent Territories Citizen or British Overseas Citizen between the ages of 17 and 30 years of age and you can come to the UK for an extended holiday for up to two years and can take up work for one year incidental to your holiday.
Canada Immigration
Immigration to Canada based on the skilled worker category, is a very popular visa programme and is intended for people with high levels of skills and experience. Canadian immigration also includes a special visa category for business immigrants.
In the Independent Category, it is important to show that you have experience in an occupation that is on the Canadian Occupations List. If you gain sufficient points on the points system, have visited Canada, and looked for suitable employment. You will need a total of 67 points to qualify under Canada’s immigration points system.
Entrepreneurs and the Self-Employed would have to meet the more onerous requirements of the entrepreneur category. There are only a limited number of occupations that would be considered under the self-employed category, such as an artist, writer, and a few others.
A Close Relative such as a spouse, children, mother or father can normally gain a Canadian visa by being sponsored by a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. Generally, the sponsor would need to show sufficient funds to look after their relative, and guarantee to refund any welfare benefits paid to the relative in the ten years following entry to Canada.
