The Skilled – Independent visa is the preferred visa for those who wish to immigrate to Australia and do not have a family member or Australian state or territory government to sponsor them.
This visa allows you and any secondary applicants included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia. The current Skilled - Independent Visa (subclass 175) pass mark on the Points Test is 65 points.
If you are granted this visa you are able to live and work in any part of Australia and engage in any type of employment.
To be eligible to apply for a Skilled - Independent (subclass 175) visa, you must meet certain requirements:
- be under 50 years of age
- meet the English language requirement threshold of Competent English
- pass IELTS test and prove proficient or superior english in order to claim additional points
- nominate an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL 1)
- have a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for the nominated occupation
- have either worked for 12 out of the last 24 months in an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupations List OR meet the two year study requirement in the last six months with Australian qualifications closely related to the nominated occupation
- you and any migrating family members must satisfy health and character requirements
This visa allows you to travel to and enter Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted. The expiry of the visa does not affect your permanent residency status if you are in Australia.
However if you wish to travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident after the initial visa has expired, you must obtain a Resident Return Visa (RRV). Alternatively, you can spend four consecutive years in Australia and be eligible for Australian Citizenship.
