Australian Student Visa Requirements
Australian Student Visa applicants are subject to different Assessment Levels (AL) depending on the passport they hold and what subclass of student visa they apply for.
The department considers each of these student visa applications on their individual merits. Assessment Levels (ALs) streamline this process, allowing the department to deliver fast and efficient service to our clients while maintaining the integrity of Australia’s immigration program.
The Assessment Levels reflect risks of visa non-compliance. AL1 is the lowest risk level and AL5 is the highest level. As at June 2008 none of the student visa subclasses had any nationalities specified as AL5.
Students holding passports from countries not given a specific Assessment Level (AL) are allocated AL3. The higher a student visa applicants' Assessment Level, the more evidence they will need to provide to prove that they are genuine student visa applicants.
Students must provide evidence they:
- have enrolled in a registered course
- have sufficient funds to pay for accommodation, airfares, course tuition fees (approx AU$18.000 per year for the main applicant)
- have overseas student health cover
- meet the basic requirements for English language ability as determined by their intended institution of study
